Quote from Samuel Adams

Yesterday, I heard a quote on talk radio. I found it particularly relevant given today’s world. Here it is:

“It does not take a majority to prevail…but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.” - Samuel Adams

Those of us who remain lovers of liberty would do well to keep this comment in our hearts.

Connecticut Allows Homosexual Marriages

I know that many reading this blog will vehemently disagree with me on this one, but I have no problem with this. I do not think that it is the government’s responsibility to decide who is allowed to marry and who is not. Furthermore, it is a disgrace for the government to even consider the issue. With all this talk about “defining marriage as being between one man and one woman,” everyone has forgotten to real definition. Marriage is an intrinsically religious institution, and I definitely do not think that the government should be involving itself in religious institutions. Isn’t there supposed to be a separation of church and state? Guess not.

Additionally, I believe that the government only has the right to intervene in someone’s life when that person is going to infringe on another’s right to life, liberty, or property. I have yet to have anyone explain to me how a pair of homosexuals choosing to get married violates this concept.

Lastly, I do think that all of this controversy is unnecessary. The concept that the government must collect a fee and rubber stamp a license in order to somehow validate a marriage is appallingly stupid. I think many will reply that the purpose of the government validation is to allow for certain benefits, but I simply think that these decisions should be left up to the private companies that are offering the benefits or writing the insurance policies; however, I do think legislation enabling the joint filing of taxes for homosexual couples should be enacted.

Obamessiah Chooses Rahm Emanuel for Chief of Staff

Obama’s choice for White House Chief of Staff is particularly disturbing. Not only is he a complete moran, but he served on the board of directors for Freddie Mac during the time period when they were engaged in questionable activities, but he wrote in his book that he supports reinstutiting slavery.

Yes, folks, you read that correctly. Well, maybe you should read it again just to make sure it sinks in. He thinks that all citizens should have to perform compulsory community service.

Speaking of Moran,

Congressman Jim Moran of Virginia made the asinine remark that in his words, it is a “simplistic notion that people who have wealth are entitiled to keep it.” Excuse me?!

Victory for Gun Lovers Everywhere

By Willbert On June 27th, 2008 in Firearms /

Yesterday, June26, 2008, the United States Supreme Court actually decided that the 2nd amendment means what it says. Yes folks, a miracle has occurred. What is nonetheless disturbing is that 4 of our Justices did not vote to uphold the Constitution of the United States. I find that sickening. Here is a quick rundown of those Justices voting for and against:

Opinion of the Court:

  1. Scalia (author of opinion)
  2. Roberts
  3. Kennedy
  4. Alito
  5. Thomas

Dissentors:

  1. Stevens (author of dissent)
  2. Souter
  3. Ginsburg
  4. Breyer (also filing an individual dissent)

So what does all this mean? Well, let’s set aside the despicable thought that 4 justices in the highest court of our land refused to uphold a basic constitutional right. That will be for another day. Anyhow, the basic case was a special police officer in the District of Columbia wished to keep a firearm at his home. He was prohibited from doing so by District Law. I learned that the law was not an outright ban of firearms, it merely made illegal the possession of an unregistered firearm. One problem though. They also made it illegal to register one. In it’s beautifully written opinion, the SCOTUS ruled that the 2nd amendment is a right for individuals (glad we’ve settled that one) and that the District of Columbias laws regarding firearms are wholly unconstitutional and were struck down.

I’m just itching to see what else comes of this. What a victory. It’s about time we’ve won one.

By the way, here is a link to the complete slip opinion, which is definately worth a read. I especially enjoyed Justice Scalia’s comments at the bottom. The opinion is quite lengthy, but the first few pages are a syllabus written for us regular smart people.

The Ant and the Grasshopper

By Willbert On June 26th, 2008 in Politics /

I received this as a forward, so I’m not sure who to credit as the author. I usually hate that crap that fill up my inbox, but I actually enjoyed reading this one.

OLD VERSION

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well-fed.  The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself!

MODERN VERSION

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well-fed while others are cold and starving.

CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green.’

Jesse Jackson stages a demonstration in front of the ant’s house where the news stations film the group singing, ‘We shall overcome.’ Jesse then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper’s sake.

Nancy Pelosi & John Kerry exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, President Obama creates a new government bureaucracy, EEOC (Equal Economic Opportunity Commission) & Anti-Ant Act, retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government.

Hillary gets her old law firm to represent the grasshopper in a defamation suit against the ant, and the case is tried before a panel of federal judges that Bill Clinton appointed, when he was in office, from a list of single-parent welfare recipients. The ant loses the case.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant’s food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant’s old house, crumbles around him because he doesn’t maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

5 Reasons to Vote for Barr

By Willbert On June 25th, 2008 in Politics /

I am sick and tired of people telling me that I will be wasting my vote by voting for Bob Barr. I am sorry, but John McCain is not entitled to my vote. I simply feel that Obama vs McCain is a non-choice because the election of either of those two individuals will lead to bigger government at the end of the first term. The simple truth is, republicans want to be your daddy, democrats want to be your momma, and the libertarians want to treat you like an adult.

Here are my reasons to vote for Bob Barr in November:

1) We must preserve our national sovereignty at all costs. This means a secure border (but open to those who will obey the law). This means that we should tell the UN and any other international organization to screw off.

2) I support our troops overseas, but they have been sent over there to complete a mission they are neither trained nor equipped to do. Military forces are about one thing and one thing only: killing people. I’m sorry that this is unpopular, but our Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines are not the police department for the world.

3) The current taxation system in America is very similar to stealing. Have you ever seen a homeless man outside your car window begging for change? Did you give him a few bucks? Perhaps enough to buy himself a beer? For those of you who did, good for you. For the rest of you, let’s just say I pull out my .38 Smith and Wesson and use tell you that I’m going to add a few holes to your body if you don’t hand him $5. That would be wrong correct? So why is it any different when the government steals money from your paycheck to give to the same guy? In fact, now that the President Robin Hood is stealing from the initiated and redistributing to the uninitiated, what incentive does that individual have to improve himself? Don’t worry, I can’t think of any either. Probably means there’s not a good incentive.

4) I do not believe that more government is the solution to anything. The government which governs best is that which governs least.

5) I support an individual’s freedom to make and learn from his or her own decisions. That does not mean that the government should be there to bail out those who fail. If at first we fail, we try again. I take responsibility for myself and for my family, and I expect you to do the same.

I guess you could say I hold some unconventional viewpoints. But I would rather be unconventional and right than conventionally wrong. But in America, a vote cast for what you believe in your heart to be right is never wasted. The only way this country will ever see true change is if people get over this false notion that they have to vote for one of the two evil parties and start demanding long term solutions to our ailments.
